Umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are characterized by self-renewal, multipotency and immunomodulation capacities. Cell therapy utilizing UC-MSCs infusion ameliorates liver fibrosis and reverses fulminant hepatic failure. UC-MSCs act through multiple mechanisms to coordinate a dynamic, integrated response to hepatic stellate cell activation, and reduce the resistance to portal flow at the sinusoidal level, leading to a greater degree of ascites remission.
Hepatocyte transplantation can contribute to the damaged hepatocytes replacement and liver regeneration.
