Generation of functional thymic epithelium from stem cells

This step-wise protocol enables the generation of thymic epithelial progenitor cells from embryonic stem cells, using defined combinations of growth factors. The differentiated cells express markers typical of thymic epithelial cells and when transplanted into athymic nude mice, matured into thymic epithelial cells (TECs) that support the generation of functional T cells.
