Liver tissues from obese patients with type2 diabetes vs. Liver tissues from lean healthy controls

Microarray gene expression profiling of liver tissues from obese patients. Liver biopsies were collected from obese subjects (n=13), in the fasting state, during an elective gastric bypass surgery, and  from lean control individuals (n=5) during cholecystectomy. Participants had normal hepatic and thyroid function, no history of excessive alcohol intake, and no other chronic illnesses.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was diagnosed, based on the oral glucose tolerance test,  in nine of the 13 obese subjects.
