While mesenteric and omental fat tissue depots are located in close vicinity, they exhibit distinct gene expression profiles, where the mesenteric signature is closer to that of the subcutaneous fat tissue depot. Interestingly, metabolic differences, along with distinct replication, differentiation, and apoptosis capacities have been reported for mesenteric versus omental fat depots, suggesting that these two entities are not functionally equivalent.
