Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) play a role in pathogen surveillance. They characteristically produce a type I interferon (IFN) burst upon activation. pDCs also serve as Antigen Presenting Cells (APCs), and express low levels of MHC I, MHC II and co-stimulatory molecules, all of which are upregulated upon cell activation.
