Stratified Epidermis

Epd.SEdr
The stratified or mature epidermis functions as a barrier that protects the body from dehydration or trauma. The stratified epidermis is formed in a complex step-wise coordinated process during embryogenesis, and is characterized by changes in keratin expression. Following establishment of the embryonic epidermis, comprised of basal and intermediate layers, the suprabasal spinous, granular and corneal layers are formed by stratification.
