Fetal corneal superficial epithelial cells are terminally differentiated, flattened cells which form tight junctions, providing a barrier function. These cells develop surface microvilli and occupy the outer 1-3 cell layers of the mature corneal epithelium. Unlike the epidermis, the differentiated corneal epithelial cells do not lose their nucleus or undergo extensive keratinization.
