Intercalated cells mediate acid-base secretion via two types of transport: active H+ transport, mediated by the H+-ATPase ("proton pump"), and Cl–/HCO3– exchanger. Intercalated cells arrange the two transport mechanisms on opposite membranes to enable either acid or base secretion. These cells do not participate in sodium absorption.
