Alveolar Epithelial Type 2 Cells (Alv)

Lng.Alv.AEC2

Alveolar Epithelial Type 2 Cells (AEC-2) are large, cuboidal cells whose main function is to produce surfactant.  These cells can self-renew and transdifferentiate into AEC-1.  AEC-2 can be distinguished at the ultrastructural level by the presence of lamellar bodies and microvilli.

Multipotent cell. SP-C expression is considered a unique marker of mature AEC-2.
