The exocrine progenitor cells are cells that are already committed to the exocrine lineage and express exocrine genes such as Mist1. These cells further mature to become mature acinar cells.
Acinar differentiation in the dorsal bud is indirectly affected by Isl1 signalling by pancreatic mesenchyme in a non-cell autonomous effect.
