Foregut endoderm area containing Pdx1 positive pancreatic progenitors. Forms the ventral pancreatic bud. Commitment to a pancreatic fate in foregut endoderm cells occurs as early as E8–E8.5 in mice. Permissive signals released from adjacent mesodermal structures, including the aorta and cardiac mesoderm, are important for induction of the pancreatic program in the ventral endoderm.
