The pancreatic progenitor cells are the common ancestor of all the pancreatic cell types including the duct, exocrine and endocrine cells. The progenitor cells of the ventral pancreatic bud give rise to the cells of the anatomical compartments that develop from the ventral bud (head of pancreas and the main duct).
Morphogenetic changes accompany the differentiation process, as cells that begin to express Neurog3 (Bipotent duct/endocrine progenitor cells) acquire a droplet shape and delaminate from the progenitor epithelium.
