Gonads begin to form around E10.5 (in mouse) as paired structures on the ventromedial sides of the mesonephroi.

The genital ridge is the bipotential (indifferent stage) gonadal rudiment that appears during week 4 and remains sexually indifferent until week 7 (humans).
