Vertebral column muscles develop from the thoracic hypaxial myotome giving rise to the ventral and lateral flexor muscles in human, and from lumbar hypaxial myotome giving rise to the muscles responsible for the movement of lumbar vertebral column area. The major muscle of the later group is quadratus lumborum which enables lateral flexion, extension movement and fixes the 12th rib.
