The dorsal columns are regions within the primitive spinal cord that gives rise to the sensory half of the grey matter. The grey matter is the area in the spinal cord that contains neural cell bodies.
In mice, the dorsal columns start to develop at TS 18. At TS 21, the volume increases rapidly and becomes almost equal to the volume of ventral columns.
