Endothelial progenitor cells for peripheral artery disease

Human endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) were derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells and propagated in-vitro. Cells were then intracardially injected into nude mice that had previously undergone excision of one femoral artery. Blood flow recovery and capillary density in the ischemic hindlimb were markedly improved in treated mice, and the rate of limb loss was significantly reduced.
