Apligraf®, skin substitute for chronic venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers

Apligraf® is a living, bi-layered skin substitute (bioengineered skin), indicated for use, along with standard compression therapy, in >1-month-old venous ulcers that have not adequately responded to conventional ulcer therapy. It is also indicated for the treatment of >3-week-old full-thickness neuropathic diabetic foot ulcers which extend through the dermis but which do not involve tendon, muscle, capsule or bone exposure.

BBSS is manufactured, under aseptic conditions, from human neonatal foreskins. The fibroblasts and keratinocytes are isolated and then serially cultured under separate tissue culture conditions to establish cell banks.
