Autologous cultured corneal epithelium is produced by culturing isolated corneal epithelial stem cells from the limbal tissue of the healthy eye of limbal stem cell deficient patients.
Treatment restored transparency and renewed corneal epithelium in 76.6% of the treated eyes. The effect persisted for 10 years (at a median of 2 years) in more than 75% of the patients treated.
