OraNera (CAOMECS), epithelial cells for the treatment of limbal epithelial stem cell deficiency
OraNera, a cultured autologous oral mucosa epithelial cell sheet (CAOMECS), is a multilayered cell sheet indicated for use as a tissue graft to replace damaged corneal epithelium in patients with total limbal epithelial stem cell deficiency (LSCD) caused by various etiological diseases (severe exogenous trauma or endogenous eye disease). Epithelial cells are taken from the inside of the mouth, and a sheet is fabricated on temperature-responsive culture surfaces. The resuting multilayered cell sheet is then transplanted onto the cornea. OraNera is a transparent, resistant, viable, and rapidly bioadhesive cell sheet, cultured with a CellSeed's UpCell-Insert technology which allows sutureless transplantation onto the corneal stroma.
A phase III open clinical trial is aiming to test the product's efficacy in restoring the ocular surface epithelium of patients with total LSCD by preventing the growth of the conjunctiva over the cornea and stopping the formation of new small blood vessels.
