Stem cell-derived pancreatic islets for diabetes treatment
Pancreatic islet-like structures were differentiated from mouse embryonic stem cells, and were further transplanted under the kidney capsule of streptozocin-treated mice. At two days post-transplantation, blood glucose levels of the STZ-treated mice decreased significantly, compared to control groups. Hyperglycemia was observed when the transplanted cells were removed.
