The amniotic ectoderm is an epithelial layer that lines the inner roof of the amniotic cavity. It is derived from the epiblast (embryonic ectoderm) before gastrulation and is detectable from day 9 of human embryonic development. The cells of the amniotic ectoderm appear as a single stratum of flattened ectodermal cells. The amniotic ectoderm is covered by a thin layer of mesoderm (amniotic mesenchyme).
