Mature Retinal Pigmented Epithelium Cells (RPE)

Eye.RPE.MRPECs

Mature retinal pigmented epithelium cells have a mononuclear cuboidal structure, that feature multiple villi on their apical side.  These villi make direct contact with the outer segments of photoreceptor cells. On their lateral walls, they form tight, adherens and gap junctions. On their basal side, they contact the underlying Bruch's membrane, that separates the RPE from the choroid.
