Tracing experiments using quail-chick chimeras showed that the epicardium cells along with interstitial myocardial fibroblast, cushion mesenchyme and coronary vascular smooth muscle cells are the contributors of the capillary endothelial cells.

isl1+ progenitors from the second heart field also give rise to endothelial cells of the coronary tree, as shown by lineage-tracing experiments Therefore, future experiments employing lineage tracing with epicardial restricted genetic markers will be required to clarify the potential contribution of epicardial cells to the coronary endothelium.
