Distal visceral endoderm (DVE) cells are the tall, columnar epithelial visceral endoderm cells which lie at the distal tip of the egg cylinder and can be morphologically distinguished from the surrounding squamous visceral endoderm. Shortly after its formation, the DVE cell begins to unilaterally move over the underlying epiblast, in a direction which determines the prospective anterior of the embryo and the DVE, now referred to as the anterior visceral endoderm (AVE). In this manner, the correct positioning of the anterior-posterior axis is set.
