MultiStem®, bone marrow-derived cells for ischemic and neonatal stroke

MultiStem® are adult bone marrow-derived cells used for the treatment of ischemic and neonatal stroke. Intravenous administration of MultiStem® one day after a stroke reduced inflammatory damage in the brain of stroke models in rats and resulted in a significant improvement in motor skills. Reduced cell death and circulating inflammatory cytokines, alongside an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokine levels were also found. Animals treated with MultiStem® also showed normal spleen size compared to a reduction in spleen size in placebo-treated animals.
