Neural stem cell transplantation for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of a neural stem cell (NSC) subset which is double positive for the cell surface marker Lewis X (LeX) and the chemokine receptor CXCR4, to modify disease progression and generate new neurons in SOD1-G93A mice (transgenic mouse, a model of ALS). Intraspinal grafting of this neural stem cell subpopulation in SOD1-G93A mice delayed disease onset and progression and ameliorated the neurological phenotype of the model.
