Cell Therapy Approaches

Cell therapy utilizing cultured chondrocytes imparts a therapeutic effect in joint disease patients, via generation of new extracellular matrix (i.e., hyaline-like cartilage tissue) and by cell integration with the surrounding host cartilage. Immature articular cartilage tissue features a higher cell density and superior capabilities of producing extracellular matrix, when compared to mature articular cartilage, rendering it a favorable cell source for joint disorders cell therapy. Chondrocytes are immune-privileged and can be allogeneically transplanted without risk of rejection.
