Neo-Urinary Conduit™ (Tengion)

Neo-Urinary Conduit™ (NUC) is a biodegradable scaffold in a form of a tube-like shape compatible to human anatomy for diverting urine from the ureters. Adipose tissue-derived smooth muscle cells are seeded onto the surface of a biodegradable PGA (Polyglycolic acid) /(poly-DL-lactide-co-glycolide) PLGA mesh scaffold and placed in a bioreactor to form NUC.

The cells are isolated from the adipose tissue by enzymatic digestion with collagenase, before being tilted at 37oc for 1hr. Following centrifugation, the fatty plug is removed and the cells are resuspended. A polyglycolic acid (PGA) polymer mesh scaffold fashioned into the required tubular shape  and coated with a 50:50 poly-DL-lactide-co-glycolide (PLGA) copolymer, is seeded with the cells and placed in a bioreactor.
