Megakaryocytes are extremely large bone marrow cells which contain a highly lobulated nucleus. These cells give rise to blood platelets (thrombocytes), which are necessary for normal blood clotting. In response to thrombopoietin (TPO) signaling, megakaryocytes grow in size, replicate their DNA without cytokinesis (up to 64N DNA) and release platelets via a budding mechanism.
