Cap mesenchyme (CM) cells are regarded as a self-renewing progenitor population. These cells are located around the tips of the ureteric bud tree. Reciprocal interactions between the tip and these cells and the metanephric mesenchymal cells induce formation of the cap mesenchyme, which essentially begins nephrogenesis.
