Type β intercalated cells mediate bicarbonate secretion and acid reabsorption in the collecting duct of the kidney.


Type B intercalated cells have an anion exchanger on their apical membrane to mediate bicarbonate secretion, while a proton pump resides on their basolateral membrane to enable acid reabsorption.
