Immature Schwann cells develop from Schwann precursor cells which have completed migration, and associate with many axons within a single bundle. Through a process termed radial sorting, immature Schwann cells progressively sort axons from the main bundle; immature Schwann cells which associate with a single large axonal segment will become myelinated Schwann cells, while those which associate with several small caliber axons will become nonmyelinating Schwann cells, ensheathing the axon in a pocket of its cytoplasm, forming a Remak bundle.
