InBreath System, a nanofiber scaffold seeded with mononuclear cells for tracheal injuries

The InBreath system is a tailor-made, artificial trachea, comprised of a nanofiber scaffold seeded with autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells. A computerized tomography (CT) scan is used to determine the required dimensions. The scaffold is seeded with the autologous mononucler cells and cultured in a 3D Bioreactor that maintains the environmental conditions. Five years following transplant, the recipient showed neither an adverse immunological response nor serological signs of rejection, even though immunosuppressive treatment was not provided. No evidence of cancer has been found. The patient's own cells re-populated the implanted airway matrix. However, the patient is suffering from ongoing complications from scarring at the proximal anastomotic site.
