DIABECELL®, insulin-producing cells for type 1 diabetes

DIABECELL® are neonatal porcine islet cells indicated for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. These islet cells are self-regulating and efficiently secrete insulin in the patient’s body. To protect the cells from immune rejection, they are encapsulated in alginate microcapsules, which permit the inward passage of nutrients and the outward passage of biologic proteins and secreted compounds. The transplantation procedure was found to be safe, and repeated islet transplants were also established as safe. The transplantation induced a reduction in the required insulin dose and in the levels of circulating glycosylated hemoglobin.
