Neural stem/progenitor cells reside in specific regions of the adult central nervous system (CNS). They are defined as undifferentiated cells that can possess self-renewal capacities, and can be differentiated into all neural cell lineages: neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. They can be isolated from both the embryonic and adult CNS, and can also be derived from pluripotent stem cells, such as embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
