Anterior lens epithelial cells are small cuboidal-shaped epithelial cells which proliferate and are maintained throughout life at the anterior end of the lens. During the embryonic stage, extensive proliferation occurs throughout the lens epithelium. Close to birth and in the adult, the proliferation is mostly restricted to the peripheral lens epithelium, termed the germinal zone. These regions are thought to contain the lens stem cells.
