The dorsal mesocardium (dorsal mesentery of the heart), formed by splanchnic mesoderm located beneath the foregut, maintains the positioning of the primitive heart tube within the pericardial cavity. Upon prompt rupture of the dorsal mesocardium, the heart is left suspended in the pericardial cavity by its attached vasculature.
