The lateral ganglionic eminence (LGE) is a progenitor domain within the ventral telencephalon that, together with the medial ganglionic eminence (MGE), gives rise to the basal ganglia (striatum and globus pallidus). Via tangential migration, these structures are also the source of the majority of interneurons in the neocortex, hippocampus and olfactory bulb. In addition, oligodendrocytes arise in these regions and migrate into the developing cortex.
