The dorsal bud duct fuses with the ventral bud duct to form the main pancreatic duct, draining the pancreas into the common bile duct. However, sometimes a distal segment of the dorsal duct persists and is named the duct of Santorini. In 30% of human pancreases, however, the duct of Santorini persists only as a branch of the main pancreatic duct.
