The main pancreatic duct develops from both pancreatic buds. The distal portion of the main duct develops from the ventral bud, and following bud fusion is named the duct of Wirsung. The duct drains into the common bile duct via the major papilla. The proximal portion of the main duct develops from the portion of the dorsal duct proximal to the bud-fusion point. Sometimes a segment of the dorsal duct persists distal to the dorsal-ventral fusion point and is named the duct of Santorini.
