Promyelinating Schwann cells make up a transient population which arises from immature Schwann cells in the developing nerves, in response to specific axonal signals. These cells demonstrate reduced mitotic activity and form a 1:1 relationship with axons. They then form a basement membrane and begin to extend their plasma membrane around axons to yield a compact myelin structure that facilitates the propagation of axon potentials.
