Sertoli cells are the first somatic cell type to differentiate in the testis and to play a crucial role in directing testis development. Sertoli cells surround the incoming germ cells and organize themselves into the testis cords. These cords form loops in the medullary (central) region of the developing testis and are connected to a network of thin canals, called the rete testis.
