The mural trophectoderm is the region of the trophoblast that corresponds to the area of the embryonic sphere opposite and farthest from the inner cell mass.
In mouse embryos, this is the site of implantation, whereas in the human embryo implantation is initiated in the opposing polar trophectoderm, nearest to the inner cell mass.
The mural trophectoderm gives rise to the chorion leave portion of the placenta.
