Polar trophectoderm cells are an epithelial cell type, located in the part of the trophectoderm nearest to the inner cell mass, which differentiate into the extra-embryonic ectoderm and, in the mouse, also give rise to the ectoplacental cone.
In contrast to mouse embryos, in human development, the initial implantation contact occurs through the polar trophectoderm.
