A pair of umbilical veins, which develop within the first three weeks of gestation in humans, transport oxygenated blood from the placenta to the heart.


During fetal life, the umbilical vein is the predominant vessel of the liver, runs from the umbilicus, to the embryonic liver, via the abdominal cavity.
