The contribution of splanchnic-derived cardiogenic mesoderm to the forming heart.
The cardiogenic mesoderm contains a cell populations which develop to become the endocardium, or the inner lining of the heart, and a second population which forms the myocardium and gives rise to the heart muscles. The intersection between the surface ectoderm and the lateral plate mesoderm (i.e., splanchnic mesoderm) is termed the somatopleure and the intersection between the splanchnic mesoderm and the underlying endoderm is termed the splanchnopleure. Transverse sections are shown in all panels.
