Stages in embryonic eye development.

A. Eye development begins with thickening of the surface ectoderm and co-invagination of the ectoderm and neuroepithelium underlying the optic vesicle.

B. The inner layer of the optic cup gives rise to the neural retina, while the outer layer gives rise to the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE)

C. The optic stalk is the structure that embryologically precedes the optic nerves.
