110. Uterovaginal Malformations of The Female

  1. Uterovaginal malformations
    1. AS A RESULT OF PARTIAL OR TOTAL FAILURE OF FUSION of the terminal portion of the paramesonephric (m?llerian) ducts, we may see
      1. Uterus didelphis: double uterus with a double cervix and double vagina
      2. Uterus bicornis (bicornuate or bifid): uterus is more or less divided into 2 lateral horns.
        1. The cervix may be single: uterus bicornis unicollis
        2. The cervix may be double: uterus bicornis bicollis
      3. Uterus biforis: cervix is divided into 2 by a septum
      4. Uterus cordiformis: an incomplete uterus bicornis with a wedge-shaped depression at the fundus (uterus becomes heart-shaped)
      5. Uterus parvicollis: abnormal disproportionately small cervix
      6. Absence of uterus
    2. BY PARTIAL OR TOTAL ATRESIA of the terminal portion of one or both paramesonephric (m?llerian) ducts, we may see
      1. Unilateral atresia with uterus bicornis unicollis or rudimentary horn
        1. May also see a uterus unicornis: one-horned
      2. Partial bilateral atresia with atresia of the cervix
      3. Partial bilateral atresia with atresia of the vagina
      4. Absence of the vagina: seen in 1/4000 females
    3. BY FAILURE OF RESORPTION OF THE UTEROVAGINAL SEPTUM after fusion of the paramesonephric (m?llerian) ducts, we may see
      1. Complete bilocular uterus: a uterus having 2 cavities (also called U. duplex)
      2. Bilocular unicervical uterus
      3. Bilocular bicervical uterus
