Embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes for treatment of myocardial infarction

This study aims to test the potential of stem cell-derived cardiomytocytes in treating myocardial infarction. Cardiomyocyte-like cells were derived from human embryonic stem cells, and were injected into the anterior heart wall 3 days after myocardial infarction (MI). Cardiomyocyte-injected hearts exhibited smaller infarct size at day 60 post MI, less ventricular dilatation, and an increase in blood vessel density, as compared to the control groups.
