Peripheral blood-derived hematopoietic stem cells (family)

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are defined by their ability to renew and differentiate into all blood cell lineages. Hematopoietic stem cells are characterized by the expression of Lin-CD34+CD38-CD90+CD45RA-. Under normal conditions, the majority of HSCs are found in the bone marrow (BM) and only limited numbers are found in the peripheral blood. However, in response to certain stress conditions or mobilizing agents, their number in the circulating peripheral blood rises.

In clinical practice, HSCs are identified by positive expression of CD34.
